Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida (CLSMF) has teamed up with the Florida Bar Foundation, Equal Justice Works, and the Cobb Cole Law Firm to provide legal assistance to low income veterans with their benefits claims from the Veterans' Administration including VA disability compensation, pensions, burial related benefits, educational benefits, and healthcare coverage.
The Veterans Project was established to meet the needs of low income and homeless veterans residing in Volusia, Flagler, Brevard, and Putnam Counties. According to the recent "Homeless Conditions in Florida" by the Florida Department of Children and Families, of the 57,687 homeless Floridians, 13.6%, or 7,845, are veterans. Florida has the second largest per capita veteran population in the nation.
1 out of 5 veterans returning from Iraq and/or Afghanistan suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to some degree. That's nearly 29,000 veterans returning to Florida with these conditions. PTSD many times leads to depression, isolation, unemployment, homelessness, substance abuse issues, other mental health problems, and suicide. Veterans from low income families are even more susceptible.
CLSMF is trying to combat some of these difficulties for veterans by providing free legal assistance including representation for initial claims with the VA. CLSMF also helps low income veterans with Consumer Law, Education, Elder Law, Family Law, Housing, Bankruptcy, Public Benefits, and Tax issues.
