Jon Kaney received the Juris Doctor degree with high honors from the Florida State University in 1969 and the Master of Laws in Taxation from the University of Florida in 1979. Jon holds the AV rating from the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, and was recognized in a survey of lawyers published by Florida Trend Magazine as one of Florida's "Legal Elite."

Jon practices as a business lawyer, counseling business corporations on tax, corporate and other areas of business law, handling mergers, acquisitions, business transactions, and dealing with estate planning for transfer of family businesses. He has served on the Executive Council of the Tax Section and on the Committee on Tax Specialization of The Florida Bar. He is a fellow of the American College of Estates and Trust Counsel and past president of the Estate Planning Council of Volusia County. His articles have been published in the Journal of Taxation, the Florida State University Law Review, the Florida Bar Journal, and other legal publications.

Jon also practices extensively in the field of media law. He serves as general counsel to a newspaper publisher and to Florida's First Amendment Foundation and has represented several newspaper and television companies in Florida courts. He has chaired the Media Law Conference of the Media Law Committee of The Florida Bar and has been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists for success in litigating a courtroom access issue.

In 2002, Jon chaired Volusia County's Charter Issues Advisory Committee, which successfully recommended a charter amendment creating an elected Chair of the county governing body. He is a past member of the Board of Visitors of the Florida State University College of Law. He is past president of The Chamber, Daytona Beach and the Halifax Area, past Chairman of the Civic League of the Halifax Area, past president of the Volusia Land Trust, and past Chairman of Volusia Vision. He is a recipient of the Lou Fuchs Award for Outstanding Community Leadership.

Jon has been deeply involved in policy studies of the issues of open government and privacy arising from internet access to public records. In 2002, he was appointed by the Governor to, and served as Vice-Chair of, the Study Committee on Public Records, a committee created by the Florida Legislature to examine the effects of advanced technology on privacy and access to Court Records and Official Records. In 2003, he was appointed by the Chief Justice of Florida to serve on the Supreme Court Committee on Privacy and Court Records to continue study of the issue as it applies to the judiciary. Following the report of that group, the Chief Justice appointed Jon to the Committee on Access to Court Records with the task of assisting the Court in implementing the recommendations.

Mr. Kaney has been selected by his peers to membership in the Florida Legal Elite for the years 2004, 2005 and 2006 in surveys conducted by and published in Florida Trend Magazine. Mr. Kaney has also been selected as a Florida Superlawyer by publishing company Law & Politics.
